Damascus University and Damascus Petrochemical Refinery Company signed a scientific and technical cooperation agreement with the aim of supporting the process of transforming scientific, technical and applied knowledge to the university academic community and providing specialized scientific consultations and services to the Refinery.

 According to the agreement, signed by Rector of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban, and Director of the Refinery, Dr. Samer Abu Ammar on behalf of Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ahmad Al-Ansari, the two sides cooperate in the fields of research, joint scientific activities and training by implementing joint basic and applied scientific research in the field of environmental development and holding joint training courses to qualify the cadres of both sides in all domains of common interest as needed and within pre-agreed programs.

The agreement, which lasts for five years, also guarantees training and qualifying the undergraduate students at the University of Damascus inside the Refinery in various fields of common interest, as well as holding workshops, lectures and seminars under the supervision and coordination of the two sides, receiving master students and participating in supervising their research and experiences that take place in the Refinery, in addition to establishing Academic competitions and preserving  the winning articles for collection and publication in a book distributed free of charge to college offices and rewarding the winning articles according to the governing laws.

According to the terms of the agreement, the results obtained from the joint research programs are considered joint property of the two sides in this agreement and may not be issued or exploited commercially by any party before obtaining the written consent of the other party. A follow-up and coordination committee will also be formed between the two sides with declaring  its tasks and responsibilities.

In a statement to journalists, Dr. al-Jabban indicated that the University of Damascus is linked to Damascus Petrochemical Refinery Company through a previous agreement that had a contribution to sponsoring a number of distinguished research projects.

“Meantime, The University agreed with the Refinery to expand sponsorship to include an additional number of projects and researches related to the environment and oils of all kinds, namely among the core work of the Refinery, in addition to the visit of a number of students of technical institutes to the Refinery for training, in addition to an agreement to sponsor a number of economic projects and scientific conferences to be held at the University of Damascus,” Jabban added.

In turn, Director of the Refinery said that the agreement comes within the context of the company’s scientific plan to keep up with the scientific developments taking place in the fields of the environment and chemical and petrochemical industries by providing an opportunity for students and academic researchers in the undergraduate and master’s levels to apply their research and implement their experiments in the company’s laboratories and test their scientific production in an applied manner on the company’s products.

He pointed out to the role of workshops, seminars and scientific lectures in linking education to the labor market and raising the level of scientific research when outlining conclusions and recommendations aimed at improving the situation of the environment and the chemical and petrochemical industries.

Damascus Refinery Company has been cooperating with the University of Damascus since 2007 and has previously supported and supervised many researches and graduation projects for Damascus University students in the field of environment, quality and honesty. It has also printed a book titled ” The Road into an Environment” to support the concept of clean environment. The Company has full willingness to

support any scientific project or applied research that contributes to the development of the environment.
